In Singapore SkyGreen offers one example of how this might be possible, "not just technically, but economically". By increasing their food security while reducing the impact of food production on global climate change, SkyGreen is 10 times more productive per square foot than conventional farming. But 15 hour school days and academic pressure on students are beginning to take its toll, and the authorities are finally taking notice. "You get compared and because everyone does so well I feel pressured to do better. There's a lot of psychological pressure", says one Korean student. Here, making it to the top has become a national obsession. Schools stay open until 11pm, whilst half of teenagers report suicidal thoughts, mostly blaming school pressure. 19-year-old Jae-woo describes the stresses that accompany study for exams: "There's no me... I can't do things I like. When I'm prepping for exams, who I am just gets lost". Feeding off the system are entrepreneurs like Cha Gil-yong, a celebrity teacher who dons wigs and wacky costumes in online lectures. At any one time 300,000 students are logged into his website. "I try to entertain them and keep them from nodding off by wearing these wigs. Students really enjoy it", he says. Now, authorities are finally realising that the price of success may be too great, and are sending out patrols to enforce school closing times. Yet top performing students are even beginning to have plastic surgery in order to improve their job prospects. In a country where failure is not an option, how far will students go for success? The Frightening Legacy of US Syphilis Experiments in Guatemala

16:26
Syphilis Laboratory (2011): The legacy of US syphilis experiments still plagues Guatemala For downloads and more information visit http://journeyman.tv/62229/short-films/syphilis-laboratory.html Obama may have apologised last year for the 1940s US medical experiments that intentionally infected Guatemalans with syphilis, but as this startling report shows, its legacy continues to destroy lives. Soldiers, prostitutes, the mentally ill and even orphaned children; no one was safe from the American government's decision to deliberately infect them with syphilis. The costs are still being felt today in Guatemala as the infected and their descendants, who have inherited the disease, all bear the painful scars of those experiments. Dr Cutler moved his base when he was banned from practising in the States, after watching the effects of syphilis on African-American men who had no idea they were infected. Treating the disease "would interfere with the study", Cutler said. All are victims of a "serious crime" says the lawyer pressing a lawsuit against the US government on behalf of the Guatemalans. Obama's apology for this atrocity is a start but it isn't enough to mend the ruined lives of the surviving human guinea pigs. Orcas Co-Exist With Norway's Arctic Fishermen

Following this story, underwater photographer Jacques de Vos captures the first footage of the whales feeding at night. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures In Northern Norway herring abounds, attracting orcas in their hundreds. Having learnt that escaped herring from the fishermen's nets are easy prey, the whales can hear the fishing boats pumping their catch from as far as 18km away. "Sometimes it's kind of like we help each other", says professional fisherman Borre Hansen, as orcas circle around his boat. Ensuring that no orcas are captured in his nets "is the biggest challenge" he faces. Filming these animals for the first time at night, Jacques is able to capture their secretive underwater world, noticing their playful and inquisitive behaviour. Vijay Bhaskar agrees, he is the food administrator in Karnataka, and reveals, “the number of children out of school has reduced from 1 million to 70,000.” The scheme has also seen off the junk food industry; as Bhaskar comments, "“any person who has seen children eating a hot meal knows that no cookie can substitute.”" Like us on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/journeymanpictures Follow us on Twitter: https://twitter.com/JourneymanVOD https://twitter.com/JourneymanNews Follow us on Instagram: https://instagram.com/journeymanpictures For downloads and more information visit: http://www.journeyman.tv/film/3952 India's Free Lunch – Ref. 3952 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Scotland Touts Tidal Energy As The Renewable Of The Future

14:09
Scotland's Tidal Energy Future: Producing 70% of its electricity from renewable resources last year, Scotland is striving to become 100% powered by renewables by 2020. It is now implementing the world's largest planned tidal project. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures "Once they get this 150 tonne turbine into the water, this entire thing will swivel with the tide, four times a day, generating about enough power for 1000 homes." Eddie Scott is overseeing the instalment of turbines 100 feet underwater for Simec Atlantis Energy, the leaders of Scotland's MeyGen project to develop tidal power. Unlike wind turbines, these generators will capture energy from the regular tidal currents off Scotland's coast. "That's the real advantage of tidal energy: it's very, very predictable", says Eddie. An EU-subsidised project will test the MeyGen turbines, but Brexit could stall the process. However, the SAE is determined to persevere. "When it's fully done you're talking more than a quarter of a million homes that can benefit from the power that's generated", says SAE's CEO Tim Cornelius. For months, 'Uncle Jung' has been trying to smuggle his sister and her family out of North Korea. Today, they crossed the Tumen river into China. "We wanted to wait for darkness but were afraid the guards would find us", explains Park Myong Kwan. "So we just jumped into the river". One risky journey may have ended for the Park family but another is just beginning. China regularly returns refugees to North Korea where they face almost certain execution. In contrast, Thailand deports immigrants to South Korea. Over the next week, the Parks will travel by any means possible to the Lao border, a journey of 4,000 miles. They don't speak Chinese and don’t have any documents. "We feel like we're lying on a chopping board right now", confides Park Myong Kwan. "It's like we're gambling but the stakes are our lives". But for them, the gamble pays off. They make it to Thailand before being arrested. In a few months, they will be flown to South Korea, where they can build a new life. But in the current financial climate, for some Americans this isn't just a superstore; it's a place to call home. "Anybody can go homeless. Everybody is one step away actually." Joe is one of tens of thousands of people taking advantage of a little-publicised Walmart policy that allows travellers to pull up in their car parks and stay the night for free. He has lived in the Walmart car park for the past seven years. Since the housing crisis began, makeshift Walmart communities are attracting Americans from all walks of life. With well over a million on the streets these car park shelters are rapidly being accepted by local authorities. "I'd rather have them in a Walmart parking lot than out by the side of the road or off the highway somewhere where they're not as well protected", says the mayor of Flagstaff, Arizona. Yet as the shelters become a permanent fixture, many are getting stuck in the system. "A lot of them are stuck now; they've gone through their resources", says social worker Richard Durfresne. Iranian Innovation in the Fight Against Desertification

13:49
The Desert Jihad (March 1998) An evocative piece describing the front-line in Iran's war against desertification. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures Nasser Nikpay shows us around an eerie, deserted village, half-buried in the sand. The village is famous for the '120-day' wind. Nasser works for the Jihad-e-Sazandegi Ministry -- which is at war with the ever-encroaching desert. Iranians irrigate their land using qanats, underground channels which carry water from the mountains. But the sand is harder to control. The land can only be cultivated if the shifting sand dunes can be anchored in place. And the Iranians have come up with a very clever way of keeping the desert from drifting in the wind. It seems like horrific pollution, but petroleum mulch from oil refineries is sprayed with a big gun onto the errant sand. A month later trees are planted. The petroleum mulch prevents the sand moving and the water evaporating. After five years the mulch will be removed, by which time the desert has been miraculously fixed in place and greenery abounds. Land has already gone to the farmers who need it most for reforestation and cultivation. Now pistachio trees and alfalfa can be grown. A garden blooms with an abundance of pink roses - a testament to the regeneration of the land. Man's ingenuity triumphs over nature and pollution. Exposing The Inhumane Conditions Of Burkina Faso's Gold Mines

Gold Dust: Under Blaise Compaore's leadership, Burkina Faso's unregulated gold rush has had a devastating effect on mining conditions. This report digs deep into the industry, exposing the corruption beneath Compaore's ruling. Millions of people - including children as young as fourteen - mine in an unregulated industry for a few golden grams of hope. Marcel toils underground to support his family - but without the glittering rewards promised. “We all have hope, we hope to earn” he says, but "they rob us here...They treat the miner like an animal." 17-year old Soumaele has been mining for two years. His thin body can go to even deeper than the older men, to places where the air is impossible to breathe and the tunnels are likely to collapse. Gold promises a great deal, but in an anarchic industry, teacher Soungalo Hema fears for the future of children like Soumaele: "You try and save them", she says, "but a lot of the time it’s in vain. The 1997 Famine That Still Affects North Korea Today

22:04
Famine (1997): Incredible insight into North Korea's nationwide famine in which left thousands on the brink of starvation. Despite the need for international aid, the lack of access to the country made implementation an impossible task. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Negotiations between CARE and the government Relief Committee are fraught. The Relief Committee complain CARE is not helping enough. The obsessively secretive government wants to direct all aid to the fertile rice bowl areas around the capital, because productivity here is highest. Then they will be able to feed the starving in the country's north. Williamson disagrees and is granted a rare permit to travel north to judge for himself. The team break the schedule and visit a nursery of their choosing. Here the hungry children are lacklustre and silent. Officially banned from filming in hospitals, desperate doctors allow the camera in. Hungry mothers are supposed to supply food for their children. A family with no men starve more than their more productive neighbours. If you don't work, it seems, you don't eat. This is no socialist famine. The government says the north is not a farming area and shouldn't get aid first. CARE says aid should go to the starving. Before his escape three years ago, he didn't even know that a world existed beyond the barbed wires. Until then, his life had been one of torture, hard labour and complete isolation. 'My mother was supposed to inform on me and me on her'. He believed she deserved her fate as he witnessed her execution. 'I blamed her. I had no real feelings as a kid'. Shin didn't know love, only violence. 'Once the guards beat a little girl on the head so hard, she died the next day'. He eventually escaped through a gap in a high-voltage fence. His charred legs still bear the scars. As horrible as it is, Shin's story is not unique. Wang, himself a former prisoner, is a prominent writer on the subject. He believes that oppression in North Korea will keep increasing: 'The brutality of the system has grown to the point where Kim Jong Il now fears that he will suffer the same fate as Caucescu of Romania. Japan's Dark History Of Persecuting The Disabled

25:22
Japan's Disability Shame: After the Second World War, the Japanese government actively sought to cull its disabled population through a program of forced sterilisation. Disabilities have remained greatly stigmatised ever since. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures "He was cut four centimetres deep in the stomach." In 2016, Chikiko Ono's son Kazuya was one of many injured in Japan's biggest mass killing since WW2, when a former employee of a disabled care home ran through the building murdering 19 residents and injuring a further 27. The event testifies to the severe stigma surrounding disability in Japan today, which for Kazuya's father only increases his fear of "society's look of disdain and criticism". In 2020, however, Tokyo will be the world's first city to host the Paralympic Games for a second time, an event the Japanese government hopes will raise awareness for its 7 million citizens living with disability. Racing to stay ahead of the world economy, is the superpower about to implode? "There are around 64 million empty apartments in China," claims analyst Gillem Tulloch. It's all part of the Chinese government's efforts to keep its economy booming and there are plenty of people who would love to move in, but the properties are priced out of the market. It's after 2pm and in the new city of Dongguan shop owner Tian Yu Gao is yet to serve a single customer. "It's a bit boring," he sighs. But while the cars and houses are coming easily to China's successful women, marrying their dream man isn't. Despite a gender gap of 118 men for every 100 women, China's conservative dictum is that a woman should not be too independent and that over 28 she's labelled 'leftover'. It means that most successful women struggle to get a date and with a third of China's millionaires now female an increasing number of China's women are prioritising their work life. The result is "200 million singles in China and it keeps growing...", as Johnny Du, the CEO of one of China's top internet dating sites, explains. According to Johnny Du the women also set the bar too high. "Woman are really picky; they want the man to be very rich, young, handsome, educated...". Some parents have become so desperate they are taking details of their single children around "marriage markets". As the ambitions of the West meet the traditions of the East, it's a dangerous cultural hang-up that's causing a social time-bomb. Meet The Italian Entrepreneurs Giving New Life To Italy's Economy

25:35
A generation of young Italians are rediscovering the grand tradition of “Made in Italy”, ditching international careers and expensive studies. Is the return to their roots more than just a hipster phase? Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures “Yes, I kind of like the fact that now I’m making concrete products", says Guido Pallini, a London banker turned Tuscan farmer. "Before I was selling contracts and ideas, and a lot of hot air." But now, if he's not herding his buffalo on horseback, Guido spends his time perfecting new varieties of cheese on a farm that belonged to his retired father. "I see also my friends that went away to live in London, after 10 years they're all coming back", says Guido's sister Matidia. The trend seems set to continue, and with youth unemployment still at 35%, half of the 125,000 Italians leaving the country last year were young people. Yet for these law-students-turned-farmers and psychologists-turned-shoemakers, the future for a generation of educated Italians is back where they started, at home. Adrift In Shark-Infested Waters And Alive To Tell The Tale

Lost at Sea (2005): Though Jose Salvador Alvarenga's ordeal (if true) was much longer, the story of three Australians lost near Kiribati is just as impressive. For downloads and more information visit http://www.journeyman.tv/18504/short-films/lost-at-sea.html It's an incredible story of survival on the high seas. Three young men survived 46 days in a tiny boat at the mercy of sharks and raging seas. To survive, they caught birds and sharks with their bare hands. Ben Tooki and his two friends became lost at sea after a storm blew them off course. With no water or food on board, they were forced to improvise. "Sometimes there wouldn't be enough rain, so we licked the boat," states Ben. They also drank shark's blood and rigged up a tarpaulin to catch rainwater. In their seventh week, a freak wave left them close to death. But then, just as they all faced certain death, a miracle rescue... We are looking at life in kindergarten… Danish-style. If you’re the kind of parent who keeps a close eye on your kids in the playground, Denmark’s forest kindergarten will come as a rude shock - they do things differently here. Johan says he’s watching from a distance. So what happens if he thinks the children are doing something dangerous? “I sometimes close my eyes, because I know I have to stop something, but I can also stand and watch it a little bit first because I think it’s exciting. And I can understand why they do it,” he says. Whether he’s throwing rocks into the fjord with a bunch of enthusiastic three year-olds, or abseiling down a muddy slope with some determined five year-olds, Johan clearly gets a vicarious buzz from their juvenile thrill-seeking. “It’s not dangerous in my opinion. And if you don’t get a little bit of danger, what’s life worth living? Everybody needs a little bit of kick sometimes.” At the heart of what makes Danish kindergartens so special is one word – pedagogy. In Denmark, and in many other parts of Europe, ‘pedagogy’ is an everyday word for something that’s much more holistic than ‘teaching’. It’s something that applies from cradle-to-grave – anyone in Denmark working with young children, or the mentally ill, or the elderly, requires a university degree in pedagogy. But a year ago their banks collapsed overnight, leaving the country to face economic chaos. Like thousands of once-prosperous Icelanders, Gunnar is concerned about his future: ‘"I'’m going to lose my flat. I’'m going to get bankrupt. All because of the way things were handled here.’" Turning a blind eye, the government let banks grow ten times the size of the country'’s GDP. Very little profits were made from actual banking. "Banks only grew by spending other people’'s money, especially that of the British. ‘It'’s one of the greatest Ponzi schemes in history," says this independent MP. Now Britain wants it all back, leaving Icelanders with a huge debt. With the financial world keen to move on, economists warn of the business-as-usual mentality: ‘"If we don't make some quite serious structural changes we are just setting the conditions for a repeat crisis.’" ABC Australia – Ref. 4557 Journeyman Pictures is your independent source for the world's most powerful films, exploring the burning issues of today. Desperate men and children scour underwater mine-shafts in this terrifying report. Breathing through nothing more than a thin pipe connected to an air compressor, going 30 foot deep underwater for hours in search of gold is all in a day’s work for 16-year-old Gerald. "I'm afraid, if the earth collapses, I will get buried underneath" says the teenager. Surrounded by rock walls in the pitch black darkness of the water, the men chip away at walls for 3 hours. They find no gold. For many like Gerald school is a distant memory, and illegally diving for gold the only alternative to starvation. Hundreds of deaths by electrocution, drowning and even the possibility of Mercury poisoning have had little impact on compressor mining activities, which continue un-policed and unregulated. There appears little hope of change on the horizon. "If I could only give job opportunities - I will take them away from compressor mining. It is just that I have no alternative at this point" says Ricarte Padilla, Mayor of Jose Panganiban - Philippines' so-called "Gold Coast". As it is, the children and family men unearthing 60-80kg of gold per month see the lions share of wealth disappear into the Chinese black market. There are nearly 16,000 Indian migrants employed on Italian farms, mainly in the country's North. Many, like Jaspinder's father, arrived in search of employment familiar to their roots. "My dad is from an agriculture tradition, so when he came here he didn't find that big difference between Punjab and Italy." As the Sikhs attempt to keep their culture and traditions strong in their new home, they are also helping to preserve a piece of Italy's culture - the art of making parmesan cheese.
