Child kidnapping stopped: Hero bus driver saves three-year-old from abductor - TomoNews

01:47
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA — A Northern California bus driver is being hailed a hero after he says he followed his parental instincts, an intuition so sharp it led him to stop a kidnapper from abducting a young boy on Friday. A 3-year-old boy was reported kidnapped at the Milpitas Public Library at around 10:40 a.m. Local police quickly responded, closing the library to incoming and outgoing traffic and sending alerts to all area bus drivers to be on the lookout. Tim Watson was on his morning shift when he caught sight of one of the alerts and about an hour later, the driver noticed a passenger in his mid-20's with a crying boy, both of whom matched descriptions mentioned in the police alert. Trusting his fatherly instincts Watson pulled the bus over and announced that someone had lost a backpack. "What I'm really trying to do is to get up without him knowing to look at the little boy," Watson told ABC 7 News. "So sure enough, I see the plaid shorts and red shoes. That's what really stuck out in my mind." The father of two noticed the boy's red shoes and quickly radioed police. "And that's when my own kids came to mind and I just broke down. I couldn't hold myself down. I just had to go inside the bus and reflect," said Watson. The parents of the child were too emotional to speak publicly, but were thankful to both the police and Watson for rescuing their little boy. Milpitas police detained Alfonso David Edington, 23, who had no connections to the family and is currently being held on charges of kidnapping. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. One-in-a-billion-shot: Colorado deputy fires a bullet into suspect’s gun barrel- TomoNews

01:12
AURORA, COLORADO — A letter from prosecutors revealed the details of an attack of an off-duty Colorado sheriff’s deputy in January, which ended with the deputy firing a ‘one in a billion’ shot. Off-duty deputy Jose Ramon Marquez was walking in an apartment complex parking lot in Aurora on the evening of January 26 when two men approached him. One of them suddenly pulled out a gun, and as Marquez also drew his weapon, the man opened fired 12 shots at him. Marquez returned fire four times, with one bullet hitting the suspect’s leg. Another bullet reportedly went directly into the barrel of the attacker’s gun, hit the cartridge and disabled the weapon. Marquez was badly wounded from the shooting, with bullets damaging his intestines, colon and liver. He is still recovering from the injuries. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Chinese tourist behaving badly: woman’s rants at Chinese tourist in Thailand goes viral - TomoNews

04:40
PHUKET, THAILAND — This Beijing woman, known as “Sister Bin,” is perhaps fsat becoming the world’s favorite Chinese tourist. Why? Because she had the audacity to call out her greedy fellow Chinese tourists for trying to take home a piece of wood from Lover’s Beach in Phuket, Thailand. In the three-minute video that Sister Bin posted on her Weibo page, she described an incident in which a woman from Jiangsu tried to take a large piece of wood home from the beach, despite the fact that the tour guides had told her multiple times that she was not allowed to do so. Sister Bin told the audience that she took it upon herself to tell the tour guide to report the offending woman to customs. Sister Bin then went on cursing and swearing about how Chinese tourists often disrespect other countries’ laws and treat every place like their own homes. This made Sister Bin an instant internet celebrity, helping her amass almost 5,000 followers on Weibo and over 6,000 followers on Facebook. She also seems to be determined to continue her mission to monitor the behaviour of Chinese tourists around the world. Go Sister Bin! We support you! ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Typhoon turbine: Japanese engineer develops wind turbine to harness power from typhoon - TomoNews

01:45
TOKYO — A Japanese engineer has designed a new type of wind turbine that he believes would be able to harness power from typhoons. Atsushi Shimizu founded a tech company called Challenergy in 2013 and invented a wind turbine that not only can draw power from the force of wind, but can stay functional during typhoons. The typhoon turbine consists of three vertical blades and a central rod. It has an omnidirectional axis so that it can respond to wind coming from every direction. Instead of driven by a propeller, the turbine makes use of the principle of the Magnus effect: air curves when passing by a rotating object, and the downward deflection of the air-flow produces a lifting force that counteracts the force of gravity, enabling the object to remain airborne. The blades are controlled by the central rod, which can be tightened to slow down, or stop the blades regardless of the external forces. Under normal circumstances, the typhoon turbine can achieve about 30 percent efficiency while conventional wind turbine can achieve 40 percent, ScienceAlert reported. However, conventional wind turbines could be damaged by typhoons while the typhoon turbine would be able to function normally. "Japan actually has a lot more wind power than it does solar power, it's just not utilized," Shimizu told CNN. "Japan has the potential to be a super power of wind.” According to the Japan Guide, about seven or eight typhoons pass over Okinawa prefecture each year, with about three hitting its main islands. Shimizu believes a single typhoon could generate enough energy to power Japan for 50 years. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. D.B. Cooper mystery: 45 years on, skyjacker who stole $200,000 remains an enigma - TomoNews

07:05
SEATTLE, WASHINGTON — It’s almost 45 years since a hijacker known by the pseudonym “D.B. Cooper” jumped out of plane above America’s Pacific Northwest clutching a $200,000 cash ransom. More than four decades later, the crime has never been solved and the FBI stopped actively investigating the case in July. The legend of D.B. Cooper began at the Northwest Orient Airlines flight counter at Portland International Airport on Nov. 24, 1971, when a man identifying himself as “Dan Cooper” paid cash for a one-way ticket on Flight 305 to Seattle, a mere 30-minute journey. On board, Cooper showed a flight attendant an explosive device in his briefcase and demanded $200,000 in cash, four parachutes, and a fuel truck on standby at the airport in Seattle. The plane landed at Seattle-Tacoma Airport, where a bag filled with cash and parachutes was delivered, and Cooper released all 36 passengers, along with two flight attendants. The plane took off again, bound for Mexico City, scheduled to stop to refuel in Reno, Nevada. As Cooper sat alone in the cabin, crew members in the cockpit noticed a sudden upward tilt in the plane’s tail section, which required trimming to get the aircraft back to its flight level. Investigators believe this could be the moment D.B. Cooper made his exit by leaping into the freezing cold air, through the clouds, and to an unknown fate. In all the years that have followed, only two pieces of hard evidence have ever been found. In 1978, a hunter found the fragment of a placard for lowering the back stairs of a Boeing 727 along the flight path of the plane. Two years later, about 20 miles southwest of Ariel, Washington a boy discovered $5,800 in damaged cash from Cooper’s haul. The FBI has investigated more than a thousand suspects in the case, but has never been able to identify D.B. Cooper. The bureau officially ended active investigation of the case in July, citing a lack of new information. More than $194,000, the equivalent of more than a million dollars today, has never been recovered. The FBI suspects that D.B. Cooper didn’t survive the jump, but their guess about what really happened is as good as yours or mine. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Selfie gone wrong: idiot iPad thieves arrested after accidentally uploading photos to iCloud

02:07
A Houston robbery victim got his iPad back after the idiot thieves who took it inadvertently identified themselves after taking celebratory photos on the device, which automatically backed up to the owner’s iCloud account. "I think they felt elated that they got away with such a big score," Randy Schaefer told KTRK-TV. Schaefer’s white F-150 truck was parked outside his River Oaks home on January 8th when two suspects broke in and stole his iPad, $5,000 in cash and his MacBook Pro. It wasn’t until last Friday morning, though, that he discovered the culprits behind the theft when he checked his iCloud photo stream and found 17 selfies taken by two mysterious men. The photos showed the suspects posing with stacks of $100 bills and going as far as to put them in their mouths. A Youtube video surfaced Friday night showing the men throwing up gang signs saying, “this is what you get from a good night’s hustle.” Schaefer said the selfies were taken on his iPad at a Burger King just two miles down the street from his home. Some of the other stolen items were found in an alley behind a Starbucks located near the Burger King. Schaefer believes the suspects connected to the Starbucks Wi-Fi and synced the selfies accidentally to his iCloud account. Police arrested the dumb duo on Wednesday and charged Dorian Markee Walker-Gaines, 20, and his friend Dylan, 22, with theft. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Smart Floating Farm: Forward Thinking Architecture’s invention could help feed the world - TomoNews

02:02
BARCELONA, SPAIN — A Barcelona-based company has developed a solar powered floating farm system that could ease growing food demand around the world. Smart Floating Farms, otherwise known as SFF, was developed by Forward Thinking Architecture. The idea was inspired by traditional grid-shape fish farms in Asia. The structure is 200 meters wide and 350 meters long, which is roughly the size of 6 football fields. They can be connected to form a cluster of modules. The floating farm has three levels: the top level is installed with photovoltaic panels to harvest sunlight for electricity and it has rainwater collectors for irrigation purposes; second level serves as a greenhouse for the vegetables, which are grown without soil under the hydroponic system; and the ground level is used as a fish farm on the open sea, as well as a fish egg hatchery, a slaughterhouse and a storage room for the fish. All the modules are centrally controlled by software via Cloud technology. The production data will be analysed and can be used to make comparisons on food needs for specific cities. Each SFF is estimated to have a maximum production of 8.152 tons of vegetables and 1.703 tons of fish per year. The floating farms are ideal for densely populated cities near coastal areas such as Los Angeles, New York, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Soldier jumps on grenade: Hero Marine who saved squad in Iraq denied Medal of Honor - TomoNews

01:38
SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA — After years of fighting for a Medal of Honor nomination, the family of a heroic Marine sergeant has given up and instead accepted a Navy Cross on his behalf. Sgt. Rafael Peralta died in Iraq after absorbing the blow of a grenade that would likely have killed members of his team. He was just 25. Former Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel rejected the Medal of Honor bid because the details of Peralta’s death are still under dispute. On the morning of November 15th 2004, Peralta’s team was clearing houses in Fallujah. Inside the fourth house, the team threw open a door to find several insurgents armed with AK-47s. The Marines exchanged fire with the men and killed one of the insurgents. During the fire exchange, a bullet struck Rafael, severely injuring him. Reports indicate Peralta was struck by a bullet from his own team as he tried to move out of the line of fire. As the remaining insurgents retreated, a grenade landed next to Peralta. Initial reports indicated he pulled the grenade under his body in an effort to shield his men from the explosion. But later reports contradicted that story. “I can remember people saying it would be the right thing to do, to say that he did more than he did,” said Reggie Brown, who was inside the house with Peralta, during a 2014 interview with the Washington Post. “I disagree with everything my fellow Marines proclaim to have seen,” Brown said. Other Marines have disputed Brown’s statement. Regardless, Peralta’s body did absorb the blow of the grenade, which normally has a 5-meter killing radius. On Monday morning, Peralta’s mother accepted the Navy Cross, which is the second highest award a Marine can receive. Peralta’s brother spoke at the ceremony and read the last letter he received from the fallen hero. In it, Peralta told his little brother to “just remember that I already lived my life to the fullest.” Peralta was a Mexican immigrant, who reportedly enlisted in the military the same day he received his green card. “His legacy will carry on as long as the Marine Corps stays alive,” Rick Peralta said during the ceremony. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Giant sinkholes near Wink, Texas are expanding, on the verge of catastrophic collapse - TomoNews

02:18
WINK, TEXAS — Satellite images show that two massive sinkholes near Wink, Texas are growing, and that more sinkholes are forming nearby, according to geophysicists at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, who reported their findings in the journal Remote Sensing. The sinkholes, named Wink 1 and Wink 2, are located between the small towns of Wink and Kermit in West Texas. The scientists said the sinkholes are unstable and subsiding at an alarming rate. More sinkholes could appear in the future, and they could collapse into one giant sinkhole. A collapse of the sinkholes, because they are near two towns as well as oil and gas facilities, could be catastrophic, the scientists warned. “This area is heavily populated with oil and gas production equipment and installations, hazardous liquid pipelines, as well as two communities. The intrusion of freshwater to underground can dissolve the interbedded salt layers and accelerate the sinkhole collapse,” Jin-Woo Kim, leader of the study and research scientist at Southern Methodist University, said in a statement. Wink 2 is about 3 kilometers from the town of Wink, which has a population of 940 people. Wink 1 is about 6 kilometers from the town of Kermit, which is home to 6,000 people. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Woman who licks ice cream faces up to 20 years in prison - TomoNews

TEXAS, LUFKIN — In what seems to be a trend of filming yourself doing derpy, trashy things in public that, let's be honest, lowers the expectations of society and further reinstates how underwhelming social media can be — a woman licked a tub of ice cream inside a Lufkin Walmart, and then put it back. BioCarbon Engineering: ex-NASA engineer to plant one billion trees with drones - TomoNews

01:50
OXFORD, U.K. — Oxford-based start-up BioCarbon Engineering, founded by former NASA engineer Lauren Fletcher, is planning to fight industrial deforestation by planting 1 billion trees a year using drones. In a video made by the company, BioCarbon Engineering explains that the drones would first fly above a selected area, map its level of deforestation and report back its potential for reforestation. Then automated planting drones carrying seed pods would fly one to two meters above the ground, following a pre-determined planting pattern, and fire germinated seeds into the soil. A small pressurized canister would provide the necessary propulsive force for the seed pods to easily penetrate the soil surface. The seed pods, filled with nutritious hydrogel to reduce the force of the seed's impact with the soil, would then break open upon impact and allow the germinated seeds to grow. "Our technology is making it easier for ecosystem restoration groups, mining companies and forestry groups, both private and public, to plant the trees, where they need them, at a fraction of the time and cost," Fletcher said in a statement on the company website. According to the Independent, one drone is able to plant 10 seeds per minute. With two operators controlling multiple drones, 36,000 trees could be planted in a single day. The drones are not yet ready for deployment, but the company has already attracted investment from French drone maker Parrot, which is expected to accelerate the development of the technology. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Open carry stand off: Gun owner stares down three cops in Connecticut Subway store - TomoNews

02:53
BRIDGEPORT, CONNECTICUT — An open-carry gun owner who recorded video of police confronting him inside a Connecticut Subway store on Tuesday later posted the clip online in an incident that is sure to spark debate. The video opens with the gun owner being repeatedly asked by one officer to show his permit. The gun owner politely declines each request, saying he is acting in accordance with the law, while insisting he only wants to buy a sandwich. Eventually, the officer's superior enters the restaurant and tells the man they have received a complaint. While they continue to argue the technicalities of the state's gun laws a third officer arrives on the scene. The store owner then tells the gun owner he is refusing to serve the man, who reluctantly leaves the store. He then tells the officers he is going to Dunkin Donuts before calling them "dickheads." A second video posted to LiveLeak shows the gun owner and the third policemen arguing in a different location. During the conversation, the police officer admits that although he cannot order him to put his gun away and cannot order him to present your permit, but a business owner who is uncomfortable with him being in the store has the option to refuse his business. The gun owner then accuses the cop of harassing people for not breaking the law and asks him to go and find some real criminals. According to an article in the New Haven Register it is legal to carry a firearm in public view in Connecticut, although with a few caveats. In the article state police Lt. J. Paul Vance says, "If you have a permit to carry, you can carry a handgun on your person as long as it doesn't cause annoyance or alarm." While state police training bulletin no. 2013-01 says there is no statute which makes it illegal for someone with a valid pistol permit to openly carry unless it creates a 'breach of peace.' Local open carry advocates, meanwhile, dispute the definition of a 'breach of peace,' saying people 'feeling uncomfortable' doesn't qualify. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Teen arrested after rooftopping at 1 World Trade Center

01:22
A 16-year-old New Jersey boy was arrested for criminal trespass after breaking into the construction site of 1 World Trade Center and climbing up to the top of the building early Sunday morning in New York. Justin Casquejo of Weehawken managed to evade security and climb to the spire of the Freedom Tower, spending more than a hour on the building. Casquejo, who is a parkour enthusiast and no stranger to scaling tall buildings, wriggled through a foot-wide hole in the fence around the site. He got to the sixth floor through the scaffolding, then took an elevator to the 88th floor. From there, he took the stairs to the 104th floor where he slipped past a sleeping security guard. From the rooftop he made his way to the spire on a ladder. At the top of the building, he took photographs, then eventually worked his way back down. He was arrested on his way out at about 6 a.m. and was later charged with one count of criminal trespass in the third degree and one count of trespass. He was released without bail. Casquejo's stunt called into question the effectiveness of the building's security system. The completed building will have a system estimated to cost $40 million. The security guard who let Casquejo get by has been fired. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Crying dog breaks the internet’s heart — but this sad dog story has a happy ending" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4prKTN9bYQc -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Earthquake proof: Japan building made quake-safe by curtain of cables anchoring it down - TomoNews

06:33
NOMI, JAPAN — A giant curtain of special cables is the latest earthquake-proofing innovation to come out of Japan, and it combines both functionality and sleek design. With Japan's location along the Pacific Ring of Fire making it prone to earthquakes, citizens are continually finding ways to protect the country's infrastructure. CNN reports that textile company Komatsu Seiren has created threads made from thermoplastic carbon fiber composite, which are braided to form a strong yet flexible rod that's as strong as iron, but 90 percent lighter. The rods have been installed outside the company's building - draping all around the structure and essentially tethering the roof to the ground. They are also inside the building, and serve to strengthen the interior walls. When the ground shifts from side to side during an earthquake, the rods stretch and pull the structure back in the opposite direction to prevent shaking. The project is a collaboration between Komatsu and Tokyo-based architectural design firm Kengo Kuma. It will soon be used to reinforce Zenkoji Temple in Nagano, one of Japan's oldest temples. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Alfredo Moser's lamp is lighting up one million homes

01:05
Originally published on August 23, 2013 Alfredo Moser's invention, a lamp made out of a plastic bottle filled with water and bleach, has been spreading rapidly around the world and it's expected to be in one million homes by early next year. Moser, a Brazilian mechanic, came up with the invention in 2002 while trying to find a way to light his workshop during a blackout. He took nothing more than an empty plastic bottle of water, two capfuls of bleach, an aluminium foil, heavy-duty scissors, a drill and polyester resin. After pouring water and bleach into the bottle, he made a hole into an aluminium foil and fixed it on top of the bottle. He then drilled a hole into the roof and fixed the bottle with polyester resin to avoid the roof leaking in case of rain. Carmelinda, Moser's wife, told the BBC her husband has always been very good at making things around the house. The lamp gives out as much light as a 40-to-60-watt bulb. However, it doesn't work at night and cannot store energy. According to reports, since its invention it has spread to 16 countries, including Argentina, Tanzania, India, Bangladesh and Fiji. In the Philippines, where a quarter of the population lives below the poverty line and electricity is expensive, the idea took off. According to the BBC, MyShelther Foundation, which specialises in alternative and sustainable construction, started making the lamps in the country in 2011. The organization now trains people to create and install the bottles from which they can also earn a small amount of money. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Free-range kids: CPS takes children away from couple again in example of parenting police state

01:39
A family in Silver Spring, Maryland could face charges for child neglect for the second time in a matter of months. Danielle and Sasha Meitiv found themselves in the national spotlight in January, after neighbors complained they were letting their children roam the neighborhood unattended. The Meitivs -- who are both scientists -- insisted they were right to allow their children, aged 10 and 6, to play in the park or walk home from school without adult supervision. They were in the process of appealing Child Protective Service's child neglect charge. Then it happened again. On Sunday, Rafi Meitiv and his younger sister Dvora were just a few blocks from home when a police officer pulled up. "The policeman said 'we'll give you a ride home' when we were like two blocks away," Rafi told a Fox 5 reporter. "So we got into the car and then about two and a half hours later -- after sitting in the car for two and a half hours -- he said, 'okay I'll bring you home,'" Rafi said. But the officer took the two children to CPS without notifying Danielle and Sasha. The parents finally received a call around 8 p.m., but were not permitted to see their children for several more hours. "It's 10:30 at night," Danielle told reporters once CPS handed the children over. "They've been missing since 6 o'clock." Danielle said the kids normally carry "free range" badges so neighbors know they're not lost, but the children had left them behind that day. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Japan's Tajima Motor Company unveils Tsunami Floating Shelter SAFE+ survival pod

Check out our official website: http://us.tomonews.net/ Check out our Android app: http://goo.gl/PtT6VD Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ A Japanese company plans to build a tsunami survival pod designed for rescue workers who wait until the last minute before evacuating. Tajima Motor Corporation's Tsunami Floating Shelter SAFE+ comes in two sizes that hold 10 or 20 people, respectively. The design was inspired by the March 2011 tsunami that hit Japan and is part of a planned suite of rescue and evacuation systems under the SAFE+ moniker, including amphibious rescue ambulances, planned by company CEO Nobuhiro Tajima. Noting that the pods will most likely not often be used for actual tsunamis, the developers noted that they could also be used as karaoke rooms and first aid booths. The SAFE+ tsunami pod will cost roughly US$44,000 to $48,000 depending on certain options such as an external generator and roof-mounted solar panel. Tajima Motor plans to produce 1,000 units this year. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Titan Aerospace unveils the world's first solar-powered UAVs

01:13
Originally published on August 26, 2013 Aircraft designer Titan Aerospace unveiled last week its Solara 50 and 60 unmanned aircrafts, the world's first atmospheric satellites powered by the sun with a mission range of over 4 million kilometres. An atmospheric satellite is a drone that can conduct most of the operations of an orbital satellite, but is much cheaper and more versatile. Among the applications of a Solara aircraft there are disaster recovery, weather monitoring, communications relay, oceanographic research and earth imaging. According to reports, Solara 50 and 60 can be launched at night using power from internal battery banks. When the sun rises, the solar panels covering the crafts' wings and tails, store enough energy to allow them ascend to a position of 20 km above the sea level and to stay aloft continuously for five years, without ever having to land and refuel. The aircrafts will operate in an atmospheric sweet spot known as the tropopause where winds are generally less than 5 knots. Despite its massive dimensions, Solara 50 only weighs about 160 kg, and can carry a payload of 32 kg. According to reports, differently from satellites, it is possible to get the payload back at the end of its five years endurance. As for the speed, Solara 50 can travel at 104 kilometres an hour (about 64 MPH). According to reports, smaller versions of Solara have already flown, and Titan Aerospace is planning to start selling operational systems in less than a year which opens up possibilities like regional internet or a version of Google Maps with real-time images. -------------------------------------------------------- TomoNews is your daily source for top animated news. Renewable energy: CETO system converts sea waves into zero-emission electricity

01:21
An Australian company has been working on a system that uses underwater buoys to convert sea waves into zero-emission energy and desalinated water. Australian firm Carnegie Wave Energy has been developing a system called CETO, which aims to utilise sea waves to generate power. Steel-made buoys that can currently generate 240 kilowatts are the main part of the system. At the Australian naval base HMAS Stirling, three buoys are placed 11 kilometres apart. The buoys are less susceptible to extreme weather damage, while underwater waves are sufficient to generate power. The buoys' pumps drive the high pressure water to an onshore power plant via a subsea pipe. The high pressure water spins the turbines, which then generate zero-carbon electricity. The CETO system can be used to power a desalination plant as well. High pressure water can be utilised to remove salt from seawater through a permeable membrane in a process called reverse osmosis. The Australian company believes that the cost of electricity generated by the CETO system will be competitive with diesel if it is deployed at a large scale. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Sea lion jumps on fishing boat, gets rewarded with huge fish

01:21
Who knew sea lions were so fast? Apparently, an adult California sea lion weighing 440 pounds and measuring seven feet in length can reach a top swimming speed of 13.4 miles per hour. So it was a bit of a surprise to see this California sea lion chasing a fishing boat off the coast of Mexico near Rayo, Loma Del Sol. The sea lion is seen swimming fast in the boat’s wake. The humans on board open the back door, allowing the sea lion to board. What happens next is truly amazing. The sea lion is rewarded with a huge fish. It’s almost as though it knew what to expect for its efforts. Treat in hand, the sea lion bids farewell and quickly makes its way back into the ocean. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Tree man disease: Bangladesh man receives 16 surgeries to restore hands to normal - TomoNews

05:35
DHAKA, BANGLADESH — It may have taken a year and an insane number of surgeries, but this Bangladeshi man couldn’t be happier to finally have his hands and feet back. CNN reports that Abul Bajander suffers from epidermodysplasia verruciformis, a rare disease that began causing lesions to appear on his skin at age 10. The lesions worsened over time, eventually encompassing both his hands and making it difficult for him to make a living as a rickshaw driver. Bark-like growths had also started sprouting from his hands and feet, making it impossible to do anything except scratch his neck. The 27-year-old has been dubbed “Tree Man” by international media, and is one of only four people in the world to ever be diagnosed with the disease. Doctors in Dhaka offered to treat him free of charge, and moved him and his family to the hospital last February to begin the first of many groundbreaking surgeries. Sixteen operations later, doctors have removed eleven pounds of growth and restored tree man’s hands. He’ll still need a few more surgeries for beautification, but he now can at least eat, write, and hold his 3-year-old daughter on his own. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ TomoNews is your best source for real news. Largest indoor vertical farm uses 95 percent less water and produces more per square feet -TomoNews

02:17
NEWARK, NEW JERSEY — The world’s largest indoor vertical farm is well on its way to producing millions of pounds of food a year while using less water. Last December, AeroFarms Inc. secured $20 million in a Series B round of venture funding, paving the way for its 70,000 square foot facility in Newark, New Jersey, which the company says has the potential to produce 2 million pounds of food a year. Ground was broken on the facility last year and it is now nearing completion. It houses an efficient “aeroponic vertical farm” system that uses 95 percent less water than conventional commercial field farms and 40 percent less than hydroponic farms. The farm uses no sunlight or soil. Instead, the plants are housed on shelves and sprout out of a cloth medium made of post-consumer, recycled plastic. Each cloth takes 24 plastic water bottles out of the waste stream. An aeroponic system mists the plant roots with water, nutrients and oxygen. The closed system allows the farm to use less water. An LED lighting system is programmed to create a specific light recipe for each plant, giving the greens the exact spectrum, intensity and frequency they need for photosynthesis in the most energy-efficient way possible. The programmed lights also allow farmers to control the size, shape, texture, color, flavor and nutritional content of the foods produced. The cloth medium separates the plants from the nutrient-rich mists, allowing for fresh, clean and dry produce to be harvested. Once harvested, the cloth medium can be fully sanitized and reused on new crops. Utilizing the aeroponic and LED systems, the scientific farmers can monitor all the macro- and micronutrients of each plant, allowing AeroFarms to grow a plant in half the time of a commercial farm and with more productivity per square foot. They also tweak and track changes to allow for further improvements to the system. Currently, AeroFarms has two facilities with the larger 70,000 square foot building nearing completion. The AeroFarm system is also customizable. AeroFarms aims to have 25 facilities around the world in five years. The company hopes to build farms in different sizes and configurations to grow food in varied locations with the most efficient yield per square foot, no matter the space. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. WWII bomb: Unexploded bomb that could destroy an entire block defused in Frankfurt - TomoNews

06:06
FRANKFURT, GERMANY — Explosives experts in Frankfurt on Sunday defused a massive bomb — a remnant of the last World War more than 70 years ago. CNN reports that the 1.4 ton HC 4000 bomb was found buried at a construction site close to Goethe University's Frankfurt campus on Tuesday. The discovery prompted authorities to cordon off a 1.5-kilometer radius danger zone around the explosive. Over 60,000 people were evacuated from the area, which was home to hospitals, retirement homes, and the Bundesbank, Germany's central bank. Dubbed 'Blockbuster', the British World War II-era bomb could reportedly generate an explosion capable of flattening an entire block. Of the estimated 1.5 million tons of munitions dropped on Germany by Allied forces, some 15% failed to explode and ended up getting buried, according to the New York Times. Experts say over 2,000 tons of unexploded weaponry are found in the country each year. Despite having a dedicated bomb-disposal unit, Germany's unexploded bombs remain a problem. The aging munitions could become more brittle and unstable, and are reportedly being spotted in harder-to-reach areas, reports the BBC. ------------------------------------------------------------- Go to https://www.patreon.com/tomonews and become a Patron now TomoNews is now on Patreon and we've got some cool perks for our hardcore fans. Missing person case solved: veteran's car, remains found at bottom of Lake Rhodhiss, NC - TomoNews

01:08
CALDWELL COUNTY, NORTH CAROLINA — The remains of missing Air Force veteran Amos Shook, 44, who disappeared 43 years ago, have been discovered along with his car at the bottom of Lake Rhodhiss in North Carolina. The cold case was reopened when Shook's daughter contacted the Caldwell County Sheriff's Department last month. They had no clues, but then they stumbled on the 1968 Pontiac Catalina 30 feet below the surface of the lake using sonar and a diving team. Inside the car were what authorities believe to be the remains of Shook, along with his wallet. Authorities don't believe it was a suicide, or that there was any foul play involved in the death or disappearance, and the case is considered closed. But there are still some unanswered questions. Caldwell County Sheriff Alan Jones was quoted in a press conference as saying: "Finding somebody that's still alive that could answer those, will be tough." ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Seed bomb drones: UK-based start-up to plant one billion trees in one year using drones

01:09
Oxford-based start-up Biocarbon Engineering is planning to fight industrial deforestation by planting 1 billion trees a year using drones. Currently, 26 billions trees are cut down every year, while only 15 billions are replanted. The drones used by Biocarbon Engineering could solve the problem by making tree planting faster and cheaper. In a video made by the company, Biocarbon Engineering explains that the drones would first fly above a selected area, map its level of deforestation and report back its potential for reforestation. Then, automated planting drones carrying seed pods would fly one to two metres above the ground, following a pre-determined planting pattern, and fire germinated seeds into the soil. A small pressurized canister would provide the necessary propulsive force for the seed pods to easily penetrate the soil surface. The seed pods, filled with nutritious hydrogel to reduce the force of the seed’s impact with the soil, would then break open upon impact and allow the germinated seeds to grow. According to the Independent, one drone is able to plant 10 seeds per minute. With two operators controlling multiple drones, 36,000 trees could be planted in a single day. Biocarbon Engineering hopes to have the system fully working by the end of the summer. According to the Independent, the drone system is not as good as hand-sowing, but it’s much quicker and less expensive than traditional planting systems. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Poor shaming: 100 kids banned from New York carnival as friends who paid $10 ticket play - TomoNews

01:38
NEW YORK — A public school principal in the Flushing neighborhood of Queens, New York is taking some serious heat from everyone from parents to politicians over her decision to ban 100 kids from a school carnival because their families could not afford the $10 entrance fee. Principal Joan Monroe reportedly decided that allowing the kids who did not pay to enter the carnival fun area would be unfair to the more affluent children who were able to afford the fee. Reports in the New York Post said many of the children who were not allowed to attend were from immigrant Chinese families and instead of enjoying a day of school-sponsored fun, they were required to sit in an auditorium instead. Teachers from the school reported many of the children wept hysterically as they were unable to understand why they were not allowed to enjoy the event, which included a bouncy castle, inflatable slides, kids rides, food, drinks and a DJ playing children's tunes. The school principal later allegedly made a list of all the parents that did pay the entrance fee and send them gift bags. The incident caught the attention of the local school board, politicians and the president of the company that set up the carnival attraction. The company's president, Gary Pincus, said his Send in the Clowns Entertainment company would happily put on a free party for the banned kids, explaining he found it unacceptable that children from low income families were turned away. Other establishments and companies have also offered to host free events for the children that were not permitted to attend. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. First artificial heart implant offers new hope to patients with heart diseases

01:40
Originally published on December 30, 2013 An artificial heart created by French biomedical firm Carmat that is designed last to up to five years was implanted for the first time on December 18 in a 75-year-old patient who, according to doctors, is progressing well. Until now, the longest a patient has lived with an artificial heart is just under four years. The new heart developed by Carmat is designed to replace a patient's real heart, or at least provide a longer bridge of time while the patient waits for a heart transplant. The Carmat artificial heart's shape and size are similar to those of a natural heart. It has two ventricles and four valves that can reproduce the pulsatile flow of blood circulation and accelerate and reduce cardiac rhythm in according to the level of effort being exerted by the patient. It is made from chemically treated animal tissue to lessen the risk of blood clots and rejection by the immune system. To power the heart Carmat uses two external lithium-ion batteries connected to electric wires behind the left ear and linked to the heart through under-the-skin wires. The system is portable, allowing the patient to return home by carrying it on a trolley or on his shoulders. Nearly 100,000 people in Europe and the U.S. are in need of a heart transplant, according to Carmat. Men are more likely to be implanted with Carmat's artificial heart, as heart failure affects more men than women, and the device is sized such that it can fit in 86 percent of men but only roughly 20 percent of women, according to a Reuters report. A U.S. rival to Carmat, an artificial heart called AbioCor, is authorised in the U.S. for patients with end-stage heart failure or who have a life expectancy of less than 30 days, are not eligible for a natural heart plant and have no other viable treatment options. -------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Future green technology: new solar panels could generate electricity from raindrops - TomoNews

01:28
YUNNAN, CHINA — Scientists in China are producing solar panels that can produce energy from the last source you'd expect — rainwater. In a study published in the journal Angewandte Chemie, researchers in China introduced a new type of solar panel that adds a layer of graphene, or carbon atoms arranged in a honeycomb structure, to dye-sensitized solar cells. A flexible layer of indium tin oxide and plastic is included underneath. Graphene has unusual properties that allow electrons to move freely throughout the entire layer. According to the researchers, rainwater contains positively charged ions like ammonium, calcium and sodium. When water binds to the panel's surface, a double-layer of positive ions and negatively charged electrons is created, which ends up producing a voltage and current. Tests of the new solar panels have been able to produce hundreds of microvolts, which is small even compared to a standard AA battery, reports Quartz. The solar-to-electric energy conversion stood at about 7 percent, which is much lower than the 20 percent energy conversion achieved by the best solar panels on the market. So there's a long way to go before the new solar panels become more widely used. But more efficient future versions could mean big things for the solar industry. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. A series of video chats between the young man and a blonde girl from California have breached Sharia law and the country’s internet regulations. For weeks, the Arabic-speaking teen known as Abu Sin had been video chatting with 21-year-old Christina Crockett. The two seemed to be having a good time getting to know each other, even though they didn’t speak the same language. In the videos, they would frequently tell each other “I love you” and exchange heart-shaped hand gestures. Their bond caught the attention of the Internet when the video chats were re-posted to YouTube, but unfortunately for Abu Sin, the police were none too pleased. They arrested him for “unethical behaviour” claiming the “enticing” videos made Saudi Arabia look bad in the eyes of the world. The 19-year-old was placed in jail for ten days, but has since been released on bond. On October 9, he made a video repenting for his sinful ways, but could still be facing a five-year prison sentence and a fine of $800,000. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Biogas: Human waste turned into clean power in Cameroon innovative clean energy project - TomoNews

01:27
BUEA, CAMEROON — Two towns in Cameroon have installed biogas systems to turn human waste into sustainable energy that can provide fuel and electricity for local communities. The project was initiated by Bioenergy-Cameroon, a non-governmental youth organization. Local students, especially female students, are trained on how to install and maintain innovative technology systems such as solar power and biogas mechanisms. According to Reuters, the system includes a septic tank, which is connected to a bio-digester at individual households. Human waste placed in the septic tank is converted into biogas inside the bio-digesters, which release energy into people’s homes for cooking and lighting. Reuters reports that more than 3,000 households and local schools in the towns of Buea and Bamenda have installed the biogas system. The Center for Environment and Development, an NGO in Cameroon, estimates that the biogas project may reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the vicinity by up to 60 percent. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Amazing dog rescue: Pennsylvania police save dog stuck mud for three days

Check out our official website: http://us.tomonews.net/ Check out our Android app: http://goo.gl/PtT6VD Check out our iOS app: http://bit.ly/1gO3z1f ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Two Pennsylvania police officers didn't mind getting dirty if it meant saving Sheila Shorr's pet, Pluto, from a mud pit the dog had been stuck in for almost three days. Sergeant Mike Martin and Officer Mike Kushner of the Willistown Township Police Department responded to Shorr's call on May 9. She told police that her 13-year-old Australian Shepherd, Pluto, had gone missing on Tuesday. She found him stuck in mud near a stream close to her home and needed help getting him out. When police arrived, Pluto was stuck in two feet of mud and was struggling to keep his nose above the surface. The officers prepared a gurney for the canine and stepped into the mud to rescue the dog. After 60 hours of being stuck, Pluto was exhausted and couldn't even wag his tail upon being rescued. He was taken to the vet and at first it wasn't certain if he was going to make it. Pluto still has some matted hair and walks with a slight limp, but the vet said that he's on the way to making a full recovery. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Panama Papers: How do offshore shell companies work? - TomoNews

01:55
PANAMA CITY — An anonymous person from a Panamanian law firm, Mossack Fonseca, has leaked millions of documents describing how some of the world's richest hide money in offshore havens. Although the spotlight is currently on Panama, tax havens like Panama exist all over the world. People use them to circumvent regulations that protect transparency, as well as to avoid paying taxes in their home countries. Shell companies are often established in cities and countries that have lax rules governing transparency and financial disclosure, or more lenient criminal laws. Using tax havens isn't always about paying less taxes. Wealth isn't necessarily kept within tax haven countries. Often such places only serve as addresses for shell companies, which exist solely on paper, and are created for as little as US$1,000, reported Vice in a 2014 article. On paper, these shell companies act as the intermediaries that own the wealth, whether that asset is a painting or a Swiss bank account. Because of the complex organizational structure of these shell companies, it's very difficult to figure out who a company actually belongs to. Setting up a shell company is not illegal and its existence is not always for a nefarious reason. A shell company may be established as a way to for one to save up funds to open a business. It may also act as a front for a project that a well-known company wants to keep from the public's eye until it's ready. According to Vox, Apple for example, may have created a shell company called SixtyEight Research as a front for a car project. However, these shells are often used as tax or legal loopholes, as setting up a shell company doesn't require much identification, which allows their ultimate owners to evade scrutiny. UC Berkeley economics professor Gabriel Zucman estimates that there is least US$7.6 trillion kept in offshore tax havens. However, due to the nature of tax havens, it's difficult to know for sure what the true amount is. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets. Dog shoots owner in the back in freak hunting accident - TomoNews

07:32
LAS CRUCES, NEW MEXICO — A hunter in New Mexico nearly crossed over to the great beyond after his doggie best friend pulled the trigger on him. The Las Cruces Sun News reports that Sonny Gilligan had gone to hunt jackrabbits in the desert west of LAs Cruces on Thursday, and had taken his dogs Charlie, Scooter, and Cowboy with him. While in the backseat, his 120-pound lab-rottweiler mix Charlie got his foot on Gilligan's shotgun. When the dog slipped and fell off the seat, his paw caught the trigger, causing the firearm to shoot. The bullet tore through the driver's seat straight through Gilligan's back, breaking a couple of his ribs and shattering his collarbone. Amazingly, the 74-year-old managed to call for help. The lucky man had to undergo a bunch of surgeries, but is now on the way to recovery. Still, all he could think about was his boys. Poor Charlie and his brothers were sent to doggie jail, aka animal services, after the shooting, but have since been busted out by Gilligan's human son. Gilligan says he's forgiven Charlie for very nearly sending him to the afterlife, adding that it really was just a bizarre freak accident. Space travel: Stephen Hawking and billionaire’s plan for laser-propelled nanocraft fleet - TomoNews

01:33
THE FINAL FRONTIER — A team of renowned scientists, Silicon Valley elites and a billionaire businessman have conceptualized a fleet of postage stamp-sized spacecraft for the purpose of interstellar exploration. According to the New York Times, the board of directors for the mission includes Russian billionaire and entrepreneur Yuri Milner, physicist Stephen Hawking and Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg. All technology — including the camera — for the tiny interstellar spacecraft would be placed inside a postage-stamp-sized chip, reported the Los Angeles Times. Called a “Starchip,” this device would come with a light sail to form a nanocraft. This sail has a surface that would use Earth-based laser light to propel it along, reported the New York Times. The laser light would come from a laser array potentially situated 13,000 feet above sea level in the Atacama Desert in South America, reported Wired citing Milner. Using light energy from the 100-gigawatt laser array, the team plans to send a fleet of these nanocraft to our closest star system, Alpha-Centauri. The proposed nanocraft could travel at 20 percent of the speed of light, or 134.2 million miles per hour, using laser light propulsion. At that speed, a nanocraft could traverse the 25 trillion miles to Alpha Centauri in a matter of decades, reported the Los Angeles times. while a current spacecraft would take thousands of years. Dubbed Breakthrough Starshot, Milner has invested around $100 million in the nanocraft concept. However, it will still potentially cost billions and could take up to 30 years to get a swarm of the devices into space if the concept is shown to be successful, reported Wired. ------------------------------------------------------------- Welcome to TomoNews, where we animate the most entertaining news on the internets.
